Guide

What to check when buying a used Pilates reformer.

A used reformer can be a sound buy, but condition varies a lot. This checklist covers what to look at, what to ask and what to get in writing before you pay.

Start with the make and model

Note the maker, the model name and roughly how old it is. Different makers use different spring fittings, rope arrangements and accessories, so this tells you what spare parts you will need and whether accessories from another make will fit.

Ask how the reformer was used. A reformer from a private home and one from a busy studio can look similar and have worn very differently.

Frame and carriage

Look along the frame for cracks, bends, rust and loose bolts. Check that the frame sits level and does not rock on the floor.

Push the carriage along its full length. It should glide smoothly and quietly, with no grinding, catching or sideways wobble. Listen at the ends of its travel, where wheels and stoppers wear first.

Springs

Check how many springs come with it and whether they are the full set for that model. Look for stretched, kinked or rusty springs, and for springs that do not match each other in length when relaxed.

Springs are consumables. Ask when they were last replaced, and if the answer is not known, budget for a replacement set.

Ropes, straps and pulleys

Check ropes and straps for fraying, flattened sections and stiff or sticky areas. Look at the pulleys and the rope path: the rope should run freely with no rubbing on the frame.

Check the stitching and fittings on the foot loops and handles.

Footbar, headrest and shoulder blocks

Move the footbar through every position and check that it locks securely at each one. A footbar that slips is a safety problem, not a cosmetic one.

Check the headrest and shoulder blocks adjust and hold their position.

Upholstery

Look for splits, cracks, peeling and sagging foam. Upholstery can be replaced, but it is a cost to factor in. Also check for stains and smells if the reformer has been stored for a long time.

Accessories

Ask exactly what is included. Boxes, jump boards, platform extenders, rings and extra springs are often sold separately, so a clear list avoids disappointment on collection day.

Questions to ask the seller

Why are they selling, and how old is it? What was it used for? Has anything been repaired or replaced? Is there any paperwork, such as an invoice or a service history? Can you view it before you pay, in person or by video call?

Before you pay

Get the price, what is included and the collection arrangements in writing. Be careful with sellers who will only communicate through a messaging app, ask for payment before you can view the item, or send bank details that differ from those you were first given. Check the equipment at handover, and keep a record of what you agreed.
